Five of the top ten biggest pharmaceutical companies of 2014 are based in the United States as profiled by Forbes calculation of net success. The other five companies hail from Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and France.
These companies not only manufacture and provide essentials like vaccines and medical devices, but some even span into animal health care. Each of these top tens garnered success in their individual innovations, manufacturing and development, and profit.
Some notable breakthroughs include second phase research in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Investigational Treatment for Chronic Hep-C patients, partnerships with university programs, product expansions into new domestic and international medical device markets, and advances in products and services for animal diseases.
U.S. companies that made the “10 Biggest” list span the country, from New York to right here in California.
#10: McKesson — a health services and information technology company in San Francisco, California catering to pharmaceutical deliveries to hospitals, and provides software, automation and consulting to physician’s offices and health care agencies.
#9: Abbott Laboratories — a global healthcare and research company in Abbott Park, Illinois. They operate over five departments including proprietary pharmaceutical, established pharmaceutical, diagnostic, nutritional and vascular products.
#8: Eli Lilly & Co. — based in Indianapolis, Indiana, Eli Lilly & Co develops, manufactures and sells healthcare products for both humans and animals.
#5: Merck & Co. — headquartered in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, Merck & Co. engages in the discovery, marketing and development of both human and animal products such as vaccines over four departments including pharmaceutical, consumer care, alliances and animal health.
#1: Pfizer — from New York, Pfizer produces and manufactures human and animal biologic and molecule medicines and vaccines. This top-ranked company works with consumer healthcare, animal health, established and emerging markets, oncology and specialty care, and primary care.
Internationally – the other 5 companies include: Novartis and Roche Holding of Switzerland, Sanofi of France, and GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca of the United Kingdom.
